Over the years, Janet Benrey has been editorial director of a small press, a writing coach, and specialist in book promotion. In 2002, Janet accepted the invitation to apply her publishing expertise as a literary agent at the Hartline Literary Agency. In 2006, she established her own agency, Benrey Literary.

Janet says, "The heart of my agenting style is to build strong working relationships with authors. I'm proud of my reputation as an accessible, responsive agent — an agent willing to chat with clients whenever time permits. Of course, my highly personalized agenting approach limits the number of authors I can represent. I must tightly control my client list so that I can effectively serve a small group of authors whose work I truly believe in."

Benrey Literary represents commercial fiction for adults, including most genres except science fiction, fantasy, and erotica. The agency has a special interest in suspense, romance, historicals, and women's fiction.

In non-fiction, Benrey Literary represents many categories of commercial non-fiction, including self-help, true crime, and inspirational. The agency doesn't handle occult, New Age, computer, technical, business, or academic no-fiction (e.g. textbooks).

Benrey Literary does not represent children's fiction, novels for young adults, short stories, screenplays, plays, poetry, or magazine articles.
